Gerade als Quintus Batiatus dabei ist, sich in höchsten gesellschaftlichen Kreisen zu etablieren, kehrt sein Vater zurück und übernimmt wieder die Kontrolle über die Gladiatorenschule. Batiatus' Vater behandelt seinen Sohn mit auffallender Geringschätzung. Er revidiert die meisten der in seiner Abwesenheit getroffenen Entscheidungen und schließt Frieden mit dem Rivalen Tullius. Mehrere Gladiatoren aus den Häusern von Batiatus und Tullius treten daraufhin gegeneinander an. Auch Crixus wird in die Arena geschickt und muss beweisen, dass er im Kampf auf Leben und Tod bestehen kann.
